I got this Firefox optimizer which is pretty good. Cuts down the resources Firefox uses up and tweaks the settings to work faster. Before Firefox used to take up like 100,000k of memory and now it barely takes up 5,000k.

I've been using Thunderbird for email and added a nice little add on to it that will let you minimize it to your system tray so it will constantly be checking for email in the background.

Also XChat has been a really nice IRC program for me that I've been using for work.
